Reese, Loew lead Grove City over Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Dale Reese (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) scored twice and junior forward Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) added a goal and assist as the Grove City College men's soccer team rolled to a 5-0 road victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference opponent Bethany on Saturday afternoon at Hoag Field.

Junior forward Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and senior forward Jonny Rothgeb (State College, Pa./Homeschooled) each added goals for the Wolverines (7-4-1, 2-1 PAC) in the win.

Senior Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) made one first-half save to earn the victory in goal while freshman Malcolm Blake (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) played the second half to combine with Weaver for the shutout.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Loew took a throw-in from sophomore defender Frank Hueber (Philadelphia, Pa./Calvary Christian) near the baseline and found Shackleton for a one-time blast from eight yards out. The goal was the second of the year for Shackleton while Loew notched his team and conference-leading eighth assist.

Grove City's lead grew to 2-0 less than two minutes later when Shackleton flicked a ball ahead to Reese, who made a move and scored a left-footed goal just inside the right post from 18-yards out.

Loew would get into the scoring in the 31st minute when sophomore midfielder Stephen Betteridge (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) drew a foul in the box, and Loew converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Grove City a 3-0 advantage. The goal was Loew's team and conference-leading eighth goal of the season.

The Wolverines nearly scored again late in the first half, but consecutive shots by seniors Jordan Carmichael (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and Kyle Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) hit the crossbar before the Bison defense could clear.

Reese netted his second goal of the match and fourth of the season in the 59th minute when sophomore forward David Wurmlinger (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) beat his man and played Reese a ball across the six-yard line for a one-time finish and a 4-0 lead. The assist was Wurmlinger's third of the year.

The Wolverines closed the scoring in the 71st minute when freshman midfielder Peter Tobias (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was fouled in the box, and Rothgeb made his penalty kick try for his second goal of the season to make it a 5-0 game.

With a goal and an assist today, Loew is now tied for fourth in school history in career assists (14), sixth in career points (60) and tied for 10th in career goals (23).

Grove City returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to conference rival Geneva for a 7:30 p.m. match.
