DeAugustino lifts Grove City past Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Senior defender George DeAugustino (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) headed in the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining to lift the Grove City College men's soccer team to an important 1-0 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Geneva on Wednesday night at Reeves Field.

Following a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Dale Reese (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee), the ball bounced around the box for several seconds before sophomore defender Frank Hueber (Philadelphia, Pa./Calvary Christian) took a shot that was saved but not collected by Golden Tornado goalkeeper Bryan Butler. Reese was able to control the deflection and redirect it toward DeAugustino, who headed it home for his third goal of the season.

Geneva (7-3-4, 2-1-1) controlled play early in the match and nearly took the lead in the 28th minute when they beat the Wolverine defense, but Daniel Cox's shot hit off the left post. From there, play was fairly even, as Grove City held a narrow 4-3 advantage in shots en route to a 0-0 halftime score.

The Golden Tornadoes would continue to hold the upper-hand early in the second half, but Grove City claimed momentum midway through the period, earning several chances in the final 20 minutes before breaking through.

The Wolverines held a narrow 9-8 advantage in total shots for the match, including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) faced eight shots while earning his third shutout of the season.

Grove City looks to extend its winning streak to four matches on Saturday when it hosts conference foe Washington & Jefferson in a 3:30 p.m. match.
