Rothgeb's early goals lead Wolverines past W&J
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior forward Jonathan Rothgeb (State College, Pa./Homeschooled) scored twice in the first five minutes and those goals would be enough as the Grove City College men's soccer team recorded its fourth-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference shutout in a 2-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at College Field.
Junior Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) made five saves for the Wolverines (9-4-1, 4-1 PAC) to keep the Presidents' off the scoreboard and earn his fourth shutout of the season.
Grove City wasted little time in taking an early 1-0 lead, as Rothgeb collected a shot by junior Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) that was saved and made a quick cut to his right before beating Presidents' goalkeeper Jon Best inside the right post just 86 seconds into the match. The goal was Rothgeb's third of the season while Shackleton notched his third assist.
Rothgeb would find the back of the net once again just three minutes later when he finished a cross from junior Justin Phillips (Simi Valley, Calif./Oaks Christian) to push the Wolverine advantage to 2-0 in the fifth minute. Rothgeb moved into a tie for second on the team with his fourth goal of the year while Phillips recorded his second assist.
The Wolverines, who held an 18-9 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, had numerous additional chances throughout the match but were unable to extend their lead.
With today's result, Grove City has now recorded a shutout in four straight games, the team's longest streak since the 2010 Wolverines blanked five consecutive opponents from October 8-22 of that year.
Grove City steps away from conference play this Tuesday when they host Point Park, who was ranked 22nd in the latest NAIA national poll, at 3 p.m.
