Point Park slips past Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomore defender Frank Hueber (Philadelphia, Pa./Calvary Christian) scored just over two minutes in but the visiting Point Park Pioneers would take advantage of slippery field conditions to answer with a pair of goals and edge the Grove City College men's soccer team, 2-1, on a soggy Tuesday afternoon at College Field.

Hueber netted his second goal of the season for the Wolverines (9-5-1) on a free kick from just outside the box, bending a ball from the left side just past a diving Zac Borzovoy and inside the left post to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

Grove City would carry that lead throughout most of the first half, but Point Park (12-2), who was ranked 23rd in the latest NAIA national poll, found their opportunity to equalize in the 42nd minute. Junior Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) turned away Lucas Silva's initial shot but slipped to the ground on the deflection and was unable to stop Lucas Godinho's putback effort.

The Wolverines controlled play early in the second half, but an attempted clear by the Grove City defense in the 57th minute was slowed by a soft part of the field. Point Park's Max Flick intercepted the pass and won a one-on-one opportunity with Weaver for what would prove to be the game-winner.

Grove City would two close chances to equalize in the final 10 minutes, but Borzovoy came up with a pair of timely saves.

Weaver stopped four shots in goal for the Wolverines.

Grove City returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Saturday, hosting Westminster in a 2:30 p.m. match. Prior to the match, the Wolverines will honor seniors Jordan Carmichael, George DeAugustino, Kyle Richert, Jonathan Rothgeb and Mike Shupp.

*This match was later changed to a forfeit victory for Grove City due to the use of an ineligible player by Point Park.
