Loew, Reese lead Grove City past Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) scored twice and sophomore Dale Reese (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) added a goal as the Grove City College men's soccer team earned an important 3-0 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster on Senior Day at College Field Saturday afternoon.

Junior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) stopped six shots in goal in 82:33 for the Wolverines (10-5-1, 5-1 PAC), including a penalty kick, to extend Grove City's conference shutout streak to five matches. Freshman Malcolm Blake (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) played the final 7:27 in net to combine with Weaver for the shutout.

Grove City came out of the gate a bit slow but took control midway through the first half and found their opportunity in the 35th minute. Sophomore Stephen Betteridge (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) headed a ball ahead to Loew, who took one long touch ahead before ripping a shot from 16 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced inside the goal. Loew was credited with his team-leading ninth goal of the season while Betteridge notched his second assist.

The Wolverines would waste little time in the second half before doubling that lead, as Reese made the most of a corner kick just 90 seconds into the period by bending a ball from the right corner just inside the left post on his own to push the Grove City advantage to 2-0. Reese moved into sole possession of second place on the squad with his fifth goal of the season.

Loew would close the scoring in the 56th minute by rebounding and finishing a shot by junior Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) that bounced off the Titan goalkeeper's hands to extend Grove City's lead to 3-0. The goal was Loew's team and conference-leading 10th of the season while Shackleton registered his fourth assist.

Westminster (9-8-1, 5-2 PAC) nearly got on the board in the 82nd minute when a Wolverine player was called for a foul in the Titans' offensive box, but Weaver read Ryan Francis correctly to make the save and preserve the clean slate.

Grove City held a 27-12 advantage in total shots, including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.

Prior to this afternoon's match, the Wolverines honored their five seniors -- Jordan Carmichael (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), George DeAugustino (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley), Kyle Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), Jonathan Rothgeb (State College, Pa./Homeschooled) and Mike Shupp (Ephrata, Pa./Lititz Christian) -- who were playing their final regular-season home match.

The Wolverines return to action on Wednesday when they visit Saint Vincent (6-12, 2-4 PAC) for a 3 p.m. conference match.
