Rothgeb, Weaver lead Grove City past Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. -- Senior Jonathan Rothgeb (State College, Pa./Homeschooled) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and junior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) recorded his fifth solo shutout of the season to lead the Grove City College men's soccer team to a 4-0 road victory over Saint Vincent in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Stephen Betteridge (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) and freshman Blake Baer (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) each added second-half goals in the win for the Wolverines (11-5-1, 6-1 PAC) while senior Jordan Carmichael (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), junior Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and freshman Scott Marquardt (Northridge, Calif./Notre Dame) each added assists.

Weaver found himself busy early in the match, making saves on three Bearcat shots in the first seven minutes of the match. It was the Wolverines, however, who would strike first, as Loew beat his defender before sending a cross into the box for Rothgeb, who sent the ball inside the left post for his fifth goal of the season. The assist was Loew's ninth of the season and the 15th of his career, moving him into a tie for third on the career assists list and placing him alone in fourth place on the single-season list.

Grove City would hold that 1-0 lead through halftime, despite being outshot 6-5 on goal by Saint Vincent (6-13, 2-5) in the first half, but Rothgeb would provide the Wolverines a much-needed insurance goal just 23 seconds into the second half when he finished a ball from Carmichael for his second goal of the match and sixth of the season. The assist was Carmichael's first of the year.

The Wolverine advantage grew to 3-0 in the 59th minute when Marquardt crossed the ball into the box for Betteridge, who found himself with an open net and finished for his third goal of the season. The assist marked the first point of Marquardt's collegiate career.

Baer would beat Saint Vincent goalkeeper Sam Hayward on a breakaway goal in the 84th minute for his third goal of the season to close the scoring at 4-0.

The Bearcats nearly ended the Wolverines' shutout bid in the 86th minute when Zachary Kocak got a shot off a Kevin Proctor corner kick, but sophomore defender Drew Cypher (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was in the right place at the right time to make the goal-line defensive save and keep the clean slate.

Weaver stopped seven shots in goal to extend Grove City's conference shutout streak to six matches. The streak is longest for the Wolverines since they blanked six consecutive conference foes from October 4-26, 2005.

With today's win and other recent results around the conference, Grove City has assured itself of a top-three seeding in next week's four-team PAC Championship Tournament. The Wolverines travel to conference-leading Thomas More Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. match. A win over the Saints would guarantee Grove City the #1-seed while a tie would lock them into the #2-position.
