Loew hat trick leads Grove City past Heidelberg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior forward Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) recorded the third hat trick of his career and sophomore Tyler Snow (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) also scored as the Grove City College men's soccer team pulled away from Heidelberg for a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at College Field.

Senior midfielder Jonathan Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and senior Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) each added assists for the Wolverines (4-2) in the victory.

Grove City had a number of looks early on but couldn't capitalize in what was a scoreless opening 30 minutes of action. That would all change quickly, however, in the 34th minute, when Heidelberg (2-3-2) was called for a foul in the penalty box. Loew would convert the penalty kick to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

Just two minutes later, the situation would be reversed, as a Grove City defender was called for a foul in the box, and the Student Princes' Chris Koczak finished his penalty kick just inside the left post past the outstretched arms of senior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) to even the score at 1-1 in the 36th minute.

The Wolverines would counter quickly, retaking the lead just three minutes later when Mathes carried the ball downfield toward the box and slotted a pass to Snow, who finished for his first goal of the season to give Grove City a 2-1 advantage that they would carry into halftime.

Grove City held a commanding 16-5 advantage in total shots in the first half, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, and earned seven corners to just two for the Student Princes.

Loew wasted little time in adding to the Wolverine lead early in the second half, intercepting a pass just outside the box and taking a touch toward goal before finishing inside the left post in the 50th minute to give Grove City a 3-1 lead.

Heidelberg would increase their pressure in an attempt to get back into the game, perhaps earning their best opportunity in the 74th minute when Weaver saved a pair of shots from Isaac Bwayo and Koczak just 10 seconds apart to keep the lead at two goals.

Loew would then complete the hat trick in the 88th minute when Loew just managed to stay on side for a Shackleton through-ball that left him one-on-one with Heidelberg goalkeeper Jake Kress for a right foot, right post finish and a 4-1 Wolverine advantage.

Weaver stopped five shots in goal to earn the win while Kress made eight saves for Heidelberg. For the match, Grove City outshot the Student Princes 24-11 and 12-6 on goal.

With his three goals today, Loew now has six for the season and moves into sole possession of fourth place on Grove City's career goals list with 31.

Grove City travels to NAIA school Point Park on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.
