Burton, Weaver lift Wolverines past Point Park

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Freshman midfielder Jon Burton (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Christian) scored in the 63rd minute and senior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) recorded his third shutout of the season to lift the Grove City College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over NAIA-member Point Park in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Highmark Stadium.

After a slow opening 10 minutes, the Wolverines (5-2) battled the Pioneers (4-4-1) throughout a scoreless first half. Grove City then found its chance with just over 27 minutes remaining in regulation when sophomore midfielder Blake Baer (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) crossed a ball from the right side to Burton at the six-yard line, and Burton finished for his second goal of the season and his first collegiate game-winner.

Weaver stopped five shots in goal to earn his 13th career clean slate, moving him into a tie for fourth all-time among Wolverine goalkeepers. Grove City and Point Park each recorded 10 total shots, with the Wolverines holding a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Grove City returns to action Friday night when they visit nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference match.
