Grove City can't complete comeback against Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior forward David Wurmlinger (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) netted his first goal of the season, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early pair of Geneva scores as the Grove City College men's soccer team fell to the Golden Tornadoes 2-1 in their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener on Monday afternoon at College Field.

Geneva (5-3-2) took an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Abel Carleton collected a ball out of a scrum in front of the goal and blasted it inside the left post unassisted. The Golden Tornadoes would double their lead in the 23rd minute when Wolverine senior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) was unable to maintain control of a ball in the box and Jonathan Shoaf was able to get an opportunistic poke on the ball into the open goal to make it 2-0.

The Wolverines (5-4-1) would cut the lead in half in the 70th minute when Wurmlinger gathered a long throw-in from senior Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) in the box and snuck it inside the left post to make it a 2-1 game.

Grove City would manage four additional shots in the final 20 minutes but couldn't find the equalizer. The Wolverines outshot the Golden Tornadoes 18-6 for the match, including 11-2 in the second half.

Weaver made three saves in goal for the Wolverines.

Grove City continues with their conference slate on Wednesday night, visiting Washington and Jefferson for a 7:30 p.m. match.
