Mathes, Loew lead Wolverine comeback at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Jonathan Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) picked a very opportune time to score his first goal of the season.

The senior midfielder netted the game-tying goal in the 84th minute and senior forward Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) headed in the game-winner three minutes into double overtime as the Grove City College men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory at Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Alexandre Stadium.

For the second match in a row, the Wolverines (6-4-1, 1-1 PAC) got out to a slow start, and the Presidents (5-4-2, 0-1) took advantage in the 19th minute after drawing a foul in their offensive half. Jason Menni drove the resulting free kick from about 25 yards out on the left side of the box low, and the ball deflected off of teammate Paul Mokrzan and found the back of the net to give W&J a 1-0 lead.

Washington and Jefferson would continue to push throughout the first half, outshooting the Wolverines 7-3 in the period to take that 1-0 lead into the halftime break. From there, the Presidents would be content to pack it in defensively and play for the 1-0 victory.

Grove City, however, had different plans on this night. The Wolverines would continue to press, outshooting the Presidents 12-6 in the second half, and they finally would break through in the 84th minute. Junior Stephen Betteridge (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) blasted a dangerous shot that was stopped by Presidents' goalkeeper Benny Wilt, but Mathes was in the right place at the right time to head in the rebound and tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Mathes' first since September 6, 2014 when he netted the game-winner against Hilbert while Betteridge notched his first assist of the season.

Grove City would put two more shots on goal in regulation, but Wilt came up with saves to force overtime. The Wolverines controlled possession in the first overtime period, but neither team could manage a score, sending the game to a second extra session.

This time, Grove City wouldn't miss its opportunity. A dangerous shot by Loew was saved over the endline, setting up a Wolverine corner kick. Senior forward Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) would take the corner and play a ball across the box toward the far post. Fellow senior Justin Phillips (Simi Valley, Calif./Oaks Christian) would win the ball in the air and direct it to Loew, who would head it inside the left post for the game-winner in the 104th minute.

The goal was Loew's team-leading eighth of the season while Shackleton recorded his team-leading fifth assist and Phillips added his second.

Senior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) made six saves in net to earn the victory. For the match, the Wolverines outshot the Presidents 19-17, including 10-7 on goal.

Grove City returns home Saturday to host Bethany in a 1 p.m. conference match.
