Burton, Reese led Grove City to rout of Bethany

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Freshman midfielder Jonathan Burton (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Christian) scored twice and junior midfielder Dale Reese (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chafee) took part in four of the five Wolverine goals as the Grove City College men's soccer team rolled to a 5-0 victory over Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at College Field.

Reese scored what would prove to be the game-winner and assisted on three other Grove City scores while senior forward Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and junior midfielder Stephen Betteridge (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) also added goals.

Grove City (7-4-1, 2-1 PAC) put the match away early by scoring three times in the first eight minutes of action. Reese put the Wolverines on the board in the fourth minute when, after a foul was called on Bethany (4-7-2, 0-1-1) just outside the box, he bent a free kick around the Bison wall and into the upper right corner of the goal for his second goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later, another foul was called on Bethany along the right endline. Reese took this ensuing free kick as well, sending it to the far post where Burton was able to head it just inside the frame to give Grove City a 2-0 lead in the fifth minute.

In the eighth minute, Loew would make it a 3-0 game with a strong finish off a long throw-in from senior forward Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley). The goal was Loew's team-leading ninth of the season while Shackleton registered his team-leading sixth assist.

The Wolverines wouldn't score again in the first half, but just over five minutes into the second half, Reese caught the Bison defense sleeping after a Bethany foul and slotted a ball from the right edge of the box through to Betteridge, who finished past the Bison goalkeeper just inside the right post for his third goal of the season to make it a 4-0 game in the 51st minute.

Reese and Burton would connect for a second time at the 65-minute mark to close the scoring at 5-0. Reese would chip the ball into the box to Burton on the doorstep, and Burton smashed it home for his fourth goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) made one save in goal in just over 71 minutes of action to earn the win in goal while sophomore Malcolm Blake (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) also stopped one shot in his 18-plus minutes to combine with Weaver for the shutout.

Grove City will travel just down the road to Westminster on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. conference match.
