Grove City tops Westminster in OT
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by earning a 2-1 double-overtime road win Wednesday night over conference rival Westminster at Memorial Field.
Senior forward Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) scored the game-winning goal at 106:37 after receiving an assist from junior midfielder Dale Reese IV (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee). Loew now has a team-leading 10 goals and has two game-winners this season.
Reese, this week's conference Offensive Player of the Week, gave Grove City (8-4-1, 3-1) a 1-0 lead at 15:22 by scoring off a Loew assist. Westminster (7-3-3, 2-1-1 PAC) tied the match at the 28:23 mark on a goal by Matthew Kiernan.
In goal, senior Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) stopped five shots to secure the victory. Grove City held a 23-14 edge in shots, including an 8-2 margin in overtime. Each team had two corner kicks.
Grove City is now 5-0-1 in its last six matches against Westminster. Loew now has 17 career assists, which ties him for the program record. Current head coach Mike Dreves recorded 17 assists during his playing career from 1993 to 1996. Nate Jones (2002-05) also tallied 17 career assists.
The Wolverines will host conference foe Saint Vincent at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Grove City will celebrate Senior Day that afternoon.
