Grove City blanks Thiel, 4-0

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 5-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by earning a 4-0 win Saturday afternoon at Thiel.

Senior forward Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) contributed to all four Grove City goals in the win. He assisted the Wolverines' first two scores and then scored twice in the second half to help sew up the win.

Grove City (10-5-1 overall) opened the scoring at 2:26 when junior midfielder Dale Reese IV (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) headed in a Loew cross. The Wolverines then doubled the lead at the 34:52 mark as senior midfielder Jonathan Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored after receiving a Loew feed.

Loew scored his first goal of the match 4:06 into the second half after receiving an assist from freshman Nate Curry (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York). Loew closed the scoring at 66:45 with his 14th goal of the season. Sophomore Peter Tobias (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) assisted Loew's second score.

Loew now has 99 career points, moving into third place on Grove City's career list. Ross Emerson (1951-52, 55-56) had been third with 96 points.

Grove City outshot Thiel 41-7. The Wolverines also owned an 18-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) played the first 72 minutes in goal while sophomore Malcolm Blake (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) played the final 18 minutes. Neither man had to make a save.

Grove City closes its regular season Wednesday night at Waynesburg in conference play. The match will start at 8 p.m.
