GCC freshman breaks two records in opener
GROVE CITY, PA, October 27, 2001--Grove City College freshman diver Greg Sies (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) broke two pool records and narrowly missed qualifying for nationals in his first collegiate meet Saturday as the Wolverine swimming and diving team dropped its season opener to visiting Carnegie Mellon University, 140-82.
Sies broke the pool records in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with 256.0 and 231.10 points, respectively. His 1-meter score was just nine points shy of the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard (265.0).
Sophomore Drew Martin (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) added a first-place swim for the Wolverines in the 50-yard freestyle, touching in 21.99.
Prior to the meet, a moment of silence was observed in memory of former Wolverine swimmer Charles A. Droz III '71, who was aboard the American Airlines flight that crashed into the Pentagon on Sep. 11. Droz was a teammate of current CMU head coach, Dr. David Belowich '72.
