GCC takes second at distance invite

MEADVILLE, PA, November 10, 2001--The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team placed second out of three schools at the Allegheny College Distance Invitational Saturday in Meadville.

Allegheny won the meet with 589 points, followed by Grove City (471) and the College of Wooster (439).

Freshman Felix Mason (Charlotte, NC) touched first in two events, winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.23 and the 400 individual medley in 4:28.65.  Junior Bob Young (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) added a first-place swim in the 200-yard backstroke with a meet-record time of 2:00.77 and took sixth in the 400 IM, while Mason placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:03.40).

Freshman diver George Sies (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) placed second to Allegheny All-American John Hreha on the one-meter (393.90) and three-meter (418.65) boards.  Sophomore Drew McKelvy (Portersville, PA/Jubille Christian) placed third in the 1650 freestyle (18:31.03), fifth in the 500 free (5:23.02) and sixth in the 200 back (2:16.15).  Sophomore Richard Korb (Belcamp, MD/John Carroll) finished third in the 500 free (5:07.49), while sophomore Justin Huff (Waterloo, IL/St. John Vianney (MO) and sophomore Ryan McCracken (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) placed fourth (18:36.21) and sixth (19:04.19), respectively, in the 1650. 

Senior Chris Treter (Cranberry Twp., PA/Seneca Valley) teamed with Mason, McKelvy and Young to place second in the 800 freestyle relay (7:51.20).  Huff, McCracken, Korb and sophomore Matt Gibson (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) finished a close third in the 800 free relay (7:52.18).
