Wolverine men 2nd at Longnecker Invitational
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A first-place performance by Grove City College's 200 medley relay quartet helped the Wolverine swimming and diving team to second place at the nine-team James E. Longnecker Invitational Saturday night at the Grove City College Pool.
The foursome of Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), Matt Gibson (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Bob Young (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) and Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) covered the 200 yards in 1:40.36, helping the Wolverines earn 571 team points, second only to champion Carnegie Mellon (883).
Numerous Wolverine swimmers turned in superior individual performances Saturday in the second day of competition. Gilbert placed second in the 100 breaststroke while Young finished second in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 50 free. Gibson finished sixth in the 50 free while Drew McKelvy (Portersville, Pa./Jubilee Christian) took sixth in the 200 free. McKelvy also finished eighth in the 200 individual medley.
Rich Korb (Belcamp, Md./John Carroll) placed seventh in the 500 free and eighth in the 200 free while Felix Mason (Charlotte, N.C./Homeschooled) took seventh place in the 400 individual medley. Jeremy Roberts (Butler, Pa./Knoch) finished eighth in the 400 medley.
Grove City also had several standout performances in the relay events. The Wolverines' 400 medley relay, which consisted of Gibson, Gilbert, Young and Ziders, finished second while Gilbert, Gibson, McKelvy and Young notched a third-place finish in the 200 free relay.
Mason, McKelvy, Ryan McCracken (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) and Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) earned a seventh-place finish in the 200 medley relay.Boerckel, Mason, Korb and Roberts picked up an eighth-place finish in the 400 medley.
