Grove City second after first night of GCC Invitational
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- After the first day of competition at the three-day Grove City College Invitational and Presidents' Athletic Conference championships, the Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is second with 185 points in the nine-team field, trailing only Westminster (209).
Junior Rich Korb (Belcamp, Md./John Carroll) recorded a victory in the 500 free in 4:46.71 while Bob Young (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) took second in the 50 free (21.77). Young also contributed to two Grove City relay efforts that earned second-place finishes.
The Wolverines' 200 free relay team of Young, Matt Gibson (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Drew McKelvy (Portersville, Pa./Jubilee Christian) and Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) took second in a time of 1:27.35.
Grove City's 400 medley relay quartet of Young, Gilbert, McKelvy and Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) finished second in 3:35.06.
Also for Grove City, Gilbert took fifth in the 50 free while Gibson placed seventh. McKelvy claimed seventh in the 200 individual medley, one spot behind teammate Felix Mason (Charlotte, N.C./Homeschooled). Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) took fourth in the one-meter diving competition.
