Grove City stays second after two days of GCC Invitational
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Led by a victory from Rich Korb (Belcamp, Md./John Carroll) in the 1000 free (9:55.52) Friday night, the Grove City College men's swimming and diving team remains in second place after two days of the Grove City College Invitational and Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships. The Wolverine men have 437 points, trailing only Westminster, which has 500 team points.
Korb's winning time established a new Grove City record and is his second victory of the three-day event.
Grove City opened the second night of finals with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Bob Young (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler), Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) and Matt Gibson (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) posted a time of 1:38.64. The 800 free relay team of Gibson, Drew McKelvy (Portersville, Pa./Jubilee Christian), Korb and Ryan McCracken (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) closed the evening with a third-place time of 7:16.87.
Young took second in the 100 back in 53.13 while McKelvy finished second in the 200 free (1:48.10). Gibson placed third in the 200 free in a time of 1:48.96. Gilbert earned third in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 59.79 and teammate Felix Mason (Charlotte, N.C./Homeschooled) took third in the 400 individual medley in 4:21.73.
Also for the Wolverines, Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) finished fifth in the 400 medley and the 100 fly. Ziders placed sixth in the 100 fly. Jeremiah Roberts (Butler, Pa./Knoch) placed eighth in the 1000 for Grove City.
Saturday's trials begin at 10 a.m. while the finals start at 5:30 p.m.
