Wolverines open 2003-2004 season at Allegheny
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2003-04 season with a third-place finish at the Allegheny College Sprint Invitational Friday night at Mellon Pool.
Grove City earned 278 points, trailing just host Allegheny (356) and Geneseo State (N.Y.), which had 345 points. Wooster had 245 points.
Freshman Jeff Wenger (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) racked up a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 57.64 in his collegiate debut. Senior Drew McKelvy (Portersville, Pa./Jubilee Christian) and junior Felix Mason (Charlotte, N.C./Homeschooled) took fourth and fifth, respectively in the 200 individual medley.
Meanwhile, sophomore Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) claimed fourth in the 100 backstroke, two places ahead of freshman Jason Amos (Westminster, Md./Carroll Christian).
Junior Matt Trollinger (Damascus, Md./New Life Christian) finished sixth in the 100 butterfly.
Grove City's 200 free relay quartet of McKelvy, Wenger, Matt Gibson (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler) earned runner-up honors with a time of 1:32.19. In addition, the 200 medley relay combination of Boerckel, Gibson, Mason and Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) placed third in a time of 1:44.18.
Grove City will participate in Allegheny's Distance Invitational Saturday.
