Grove City 3rd at Allegheny Distance Invitational

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team placed third at the Allegheny College Distance Invitational Saturday at Mellon Pool.

Grove City earned 421.50 points, trailing Geneseo State (N.Y.), which had 565 points, and host Allegheny (466 points). 

Junior Felix Mason (Charlotte, N.C./Homeschooled) led Grove City with a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:34.80. He also took fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.90). Sophomore Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) finished third in the 200 backstroke in 2:07.99 while freshman John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler) took fourth in the 1650 (18:12.56). 

Newell finished two places ahead of classmate Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook), who turned in a time of 18:41.16. Senior Drew McKelvy (Portersville, Pa./Jubilee Christian) placed sixth in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:25.82.

Two Grove City entries in the 800 free relay earned top-four finishes. The quartet of McKelvy, Newell, Wiedeman and Matt Gibson (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) took second in 7:37.54 while the foursome of Jason Amos (Westminster, Md./Carroll Christian), Jeremiah Roberts (Butler, Pa./Knoch), Matt Trollinger (Damascus, Md./New Life Christian) and Ryan McCracken (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) placed fourth in 7:49.36. 

Sophomore diver Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) placed third in both the one- and three-meter diving competitions.

Grove City opens the home schedule Friday night at 7 p.m. against Carnegie Mellon.
