Grove City 3rd at Longnecker Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team placed third at the Wolverines' seventh annual James E. Longnecker Swimming and Diving Invitational Saturday night at College Pool.

The Wolverines earned 578 team points. Carnegie Mellon won its third straight Invitational title with 800.5 points while NCAA Division II Gannon nipped Grove City for second with 580.5 points.

Senior Drew McKelvy (Portersville, Pa./Jubilee Christian) grabbed second place in the 200 free (1:47.09) and also placed third in the 100 free Saturday with a time of 48.58 seconds. McKelvy, John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler), Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook) and Matt Gibson (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) took second in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:20.30.

Grove City's 800 free relay quartet of Wideman, Jason Amos (Westminster, Md./Carroll Christian), Newell and Gibson finished fifth, as did the 200 medley relay team of Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township), Felix Mason (Charlotte, N.C./Homeschooled), Jeff Wenger (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Gibson.

Mason took fourth in the 400 individual medley and 200 breaststroke while Matt Trollinger (Damascus, Md./New Life Christian) finished sixth in the 200 butterfly. Boerckel finished sixth in the 200 backstroke.

Grove City returns to dual-meet action Tuesday night against Bethany.
