Grove City rolls past Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team (4-2) opened the 2004 portion of the schedule with a 115-80 win at Mount Union Thursday evening in non-conference dual-meet action. 

Freshman John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler) picked up a pair of wins, capturing both the 200 (1:56.19) and 500 free (5:15.80) races while senior Drew McKelvy (Portersville, Pa./Jubilee Christian) won the 50 free in 23.06. 

Sophomore Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) took first in the 100 fly in 57.16 while classmate Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) won the 100 backstroke in 58.92. 

Sophomore Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) won the 1-meter diving competition. 

Senior Matt Gibson (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) earned runner-up in both the 100 and 200 free while Rich Korb (Belcamp, Md./John Carroll) took second in the 1000. Frosh Jeff Wenger (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) secured second in both the 50 free and 100 fly while classmate Jason Amos (Westminster, Md./Carroll Christian) finished second in the 100 backstroke. 

Junior Felix Mason (Charlotte, N.C./Homeschooled) took second in the 200 individual medley while sophomore Jeremiah Roberts (Butler, Pa./Knoch) was second in the 500. Grove City's 200 medley relay of Boerckel, Mason, Ziders and McKelvy also took first in a time of 1:49.38.

Grove City will host Washington and Jefferson Saturday at 1 p.m. in the annual Hall of Fame meet.
