Wolverines win Invitational; freshman sets record

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2004-2005 season Friday night by winning the Grove City Sprint Invitational at the Grove City College Pool. The Wolverines earned 628 team points, holding off NCAA Division II squads Gannon (485) and Edinboro (222).

Freshman Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) opened his collegiate career by setting a new College record in the 100 free. Courage posted a time of 46.74 seconds, breaking the previous record of 47.03, set by Luke Arnholt in 1995. Courage also won the 100 backstroke in 56.23 seconds.

In addition, Courage, junior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township), sophomore Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and junior Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:40.46.

Gilbert earned a win in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 1:01.38. He also took second in the 200 individual medley (2:07.66).

Also for the Wolverines, junior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central) took second in the 100 free in 49.43 while freshman Tyler May (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.56). Boerckel finished third in the 100 back with a time of 58.09 while freshman Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) took third in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:04.90.

Freshman Emmanuel Butmankiewicz (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Westminster Academy) placed third in the 100 fly with a time of 56.28.

Grove City will host its Distance Invitational Saturday.
