Grove City wins Distance Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team picked up its second win in as many nights Saturday, winning the Grove City Distance Invitational Saturday night at the Grove City College Pool.

The Wolverines accumulated 760 points to outdistance Gannon (405) and Salem International (262).

Sophomores Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler) each earned individual victories for Grove City. Gilbert won the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.01 while Newell took top honors in the 1650 with a time of 18:19.90. Newell led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1650 as junior Jeremiah Roberts (Butler, Pa./Knoch) took second in 18:34.67 and sophomore Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook) placed third (18:39.38).

Newell also took second in the 200 free (1:52.54) and fourth in the 500 (5:15.20) while freshman Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) earned a pair of top-four finishes. Harbaugh took third in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:38.38 and fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.63).

Junior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) finished third in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 2:07.70 while senior Matt Trollinger (Damascus, Md./New Life Christian) earned third in the 200 butterfly (2:13.43). Junior Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) placed fourth in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:14.82.

Grove City opens the dual-meet portion of the schedule next Saturday, November 13 at Carnegie Mellon.
