Grove City 2nd after first night of Longnecker Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the first night of action at the two-day James E. Longnecker Invitational at College Pool. The Wolverines accumulated 266 team points in the first night of the 8th annual event, trailing only Carnegie Mellon (311 points).

Freshman Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) earned Grove City's lone win of the night, claiming the 200 free in a time of 1 minute, 44.54 seconds. Courage also joined junior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township), sophomore Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and sophomore Jeff Wenger (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) on Grove City's third-place 200 medley relay team. That quartet turned in a time of 1:39.40.

Gilbert also took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.93) while Boerckel finished sixth in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 57.34 seconds. Freshman Tyler May (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.73). May also participated on Grove City's "B" entry in the 200 medley relay that finished sixth with a time of 1:41.30. He joined sophomore Jason Amos (Westminster, Md./Carroll Christian), junior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central) and junior Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) on that relay.

Amos, sophomore John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler), senior Matt Trollinger (Damascus, Md./New Life Christian) and sophomore Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook) took sixth in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:33.13.

In 3-meter diving, freshman Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) took third with 181.05 points, one spot ahead of junior teammate Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford).

The second day of action will begin Saturday at 11 a.m.
