Wolverines 2nd at Longnecker Invitational
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team placed second at the 8th Annual James E. Longnecker Invitational Saturday night, finishing the two-day event at College Pool with 666.5 points. Carnegie Mellon repeated as Invitational champion, earning 817 team points.
Freshman standout Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) earned two wins Saturday while also establishing a new College record in the 50 free. Courage won the 100 free Saturday morning with a time of 46.42 seconds, then won the 50 free Saturday night with a College-record time of 21.22 seconds. Luke Arnholt set the old record, 21.23, in 1998.
Courage joined junior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central), sophomore Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and junior Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) on Grove City's runner-up 200 free relay team. The quartet turned in a time of 1:27.77, the seventh-fastest in College history.
Courage, Haring, sophomore Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook) and senior Matt Trollinger (Damascus, Md./New Life Christian) took third in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:16.10. Meanwhile, Courage, Gilbert, Ziders and junior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) placed third in the meet-closing 400 medley relay, turning in a time of 3:39.59.
Haring also took fourth in the 50 free (21.67) and fifth in the 100 free (48.31). Boerckel took sixth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.89 while sophomore John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler) took sixth in the 1650, posting a time of 18:22.58.
Freshman Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) took third in 1-meter diving with 214.20 points. Junior Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) placed fourth (179.80 points) and freshman Chris Scharf (Springville, N.Y./Springville-Griffith) took fifth with 174.10 points.
Grove City returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 11, with a home dual meet against Hiram.
