Wolverines 2nd after first night

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the first night of competition at the 2005 Grove City College Swimming and Diving Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships.

Grove City accumulated 240 points Thursday night, trailing PAC rival Westminster (253 points). Washington and Jefferson is third with 146 points.

The Wolverines closed the first night by winning the 400 medley relay in a PAC-record time of 3 minutes, 31.17 seconds. Junior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township), junior Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon), sophomore Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and freshman Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) combined for the victory.

Courage also won the 50 free in 20.76 seconds, the second-fastest time in Grove City history. In the preliminaries, Courage set the College record in the 50 free with a 20.69. That also tied the College Pool record. Junior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central) took second in the 50 free in 21.07. Earlier in the day, Haring set a new College record in the 50 by posting a preliminary time of 20.89. However, Courage broke that mark in the next heat.

Courage, Gilbert, Haring and Ziders opened the meet by taking second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:25.31. Gilbert also took third in the 200 individual medley (2:00.24), three spots ahead of Boerckel (2:03.05).

Friday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with the finals scheduled for 6 p.m.
