Wolverines remain 2nd
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the second night of competition at the 2005 Grove City College Swimming and Diving Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships.
Westminster (653 points) extended its lead over Grove City Friday night. The Wolverines currently have 519.5 team points entering the final day of competition Saturday.
Junior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) and sophomore Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) each earned a pair of wins for the Wolverines. Boerckel won the 100 backstroke in 54.28 seconds while Gilbert took the 100 breaststroke in 59.43.
Boerckel, Gilbert, freshman Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) and junior Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:35.76.
Courage also took second in the 200 free (1:41.72), two spots ahead of junior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central). Haring posted a time of 1:46.08. Sophomore John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler) took fourth in the 1650 (10:14.90) while freshman Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) took fourth in the 400 individual medley (4:28.66). Freshman Tyler May (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.68.
Junior Jeremiah Roberts (Butler, Pa./Knoch) took fifth in the 400 IM (4:28.88) while freshman Emmanuel Butmankiewicz (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Westminster Academy) placed fifth in the 100 butterfly (53.85). Ziders earned sixth in the 100 butterfly (53.86) while sophomore Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook) took sixth in the 1000 (10:34.60).
Saturday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with the finals set for 5:30 p.m.
