Wolverines finish 2nd; Courage named MVP

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team placed second at the 2005 Grove City College Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday night at College Pool.

The Wolverines accumulated 817.5 points during the three-day event. Westminster won the championship with 967 team points.

Grove City freshman Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) earned the PAC's Most Valuable Performer award. Saturday night, Courage won the 100 free in 45.56 seconds, setting a new PAC record. That also surpasses the NCAA "A" qualifying standard for Division III. Courage has also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 50 free.

Courage joined junior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central), sophomore Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and sophomore John Newell (Butler, Pa./Butler) on Grove City's second-place effort in the 400 free relay. That group posted a time of 3:09.58.

Gilbert also took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.14) while junior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) took second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:58.53. Haring grabbed third in the 100 free (47.15) while Newell was fourth in the 1650 (17:22.81).

Junior Matt Ziders (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) took fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:01.33), one spot ahead of senior Matt Trollinger (Damascus, Md./New Life Christian). Trollinger posted a time of 2:03.77. Freshman Tyler May (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) took fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.02) while sophomore Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook) placed fifth in the 1650 (17:32.42).

Freshman Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) took sixth in the 1650 (17:47.71) while sophomore Jason Amos (Westminster, Md./Carroll Christian) finished sixth (2:05.73) in the 200 backstroke. Junior Jeremiah Roberts (Butler, Pa./Knoch) placed sixth in the 200 butterfly (2:04.47).

In 3-meter diving, Grove City took three of the top four spots. Freshman Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) took second with 314.85 points while junior Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) placed third with 279.50. Freshman Chris Scharf (Springville, N.Y./Springville-Griffith) finished fourth with 276.30 points.
