Grove City owns lead at Longnecker Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is in first place following the first night of competition at the ninth annual James E. Longnecker Invitational at the Grove City College Pool.

The Wolverines accumulated 268.5 team points during the Friday night session. Defending champion Carnegie Mellon is second with 258 points while Gannon is third with 222.

Grove City opened the meet with a pair of victories. Sophomore diver Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) won the 1-meter diving competition with 228.40 points.

Grove City then won the 200 free relay in 1 minute, 25.10 seconds as sophomore Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg), freshman Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), senior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central) and freshman Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) combined for the victory. That mark sets a new College record.

Courage also won the 50 free in 21.00 while Haring took second in 21.36. Courage surpassed the NCAA "B" qualifying standard with his time.

Larsen finished third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.86. Larsen, Courage, senior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) and junior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) finished third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:37.32.

Senior Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) took fifth in 1-meter diving with 158.15 points.

Saturday's first session will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday's second session begins at 6 p.m.
