Wolverines take 2nd at Longnecker Invitational
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team placed second out of nine teams in the ninth annual James E. Longnecker Invitational at the Grove City College Pool Saturday night. Grove City earned 799.5 team points to take second. Carnegie Mellon repeated as champion by accumulating 806.5 points.
CMU clinched the meet by winning the meet-ending 400-yard relay by .46 seconds over second-place Grove City. In the 400 relay, the Grove City quartet of senior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg), senior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central), freshman Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) set a new College record with a time of 3 minutes, 8.53 seconds.
Courage won the 100 free Saturday night with a time of 45.89 seconds while Haring took fourth in the 100 in 48.36. Junior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.83) while senior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) finished fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:03.29.
In 3-meter diving, sophomore Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) took second with 199.40 points while senior Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) placed third with 150.95 points.
During Saturday's first session, Gilbert took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.28. Freshman Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) finished second in the 1650 (17:15.61) while Courage took second in the 200 free (1:42.42).
Barron, Snyder, Courage and sophomore Emmanuel Butmankiewicz (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Westminster Christian) took second in the 800 free relay (7:15.27) while Boerckel, Gilbert, Larsen and Haring opened Saturday with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:38.35).
Barron also took fifth in the 400 individual medley (4:28.91), one spot ahead of sophomore Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park), who posted a time of 4:34.65.
