Grove City closes schedule with two wins
CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team closed the dual meet portion of the 2005-06 schedule Friday night and Saturday afternoon with a pair of wins. Friday night, Grove City earned a 70-42 win over host Penn State Behrend at the Junker Center.
Saturday, the Wolverines downed NCAA Division II West Virginia Wesleyan, 140-111, at California University of Pennsylvania. Grove City finishes the dual meet schedule with a 9-4 record. The nine wins are the most for Grove City since the 1996-97 season.
Grove City set eight new pool records against West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday. Sophomore Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) set pool records in each of his three wins. Courage won the 50 free in 21.38 seconds. He also won the 100 free in 47.51 seconds and the 200 free in 1:46.36.
Junior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) individually set two new pool records Saturday in winning both the 100 breaststroke (1:01.19) and the 200 breaststroke (2:16.72). Gilbert, senior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township), freshman Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Federal Way) and senior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in a pool-record time of 1:39.31. The final pool record was set by the 400 free relay team consisting of Courage, Haring, and freshmen Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wa./Tacoma Baptist) and Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) in a time of 3:15.15.
Boerckel also won the 100 backstroke in 57.14 while freshman Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) won the 1000 in 10:08.52. Barron's time set a new pool record.
Friday night, four Wolverines earned individual victories at Behrend. Freshman Garrett Caldwell (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.06 while sophomore Albert Cheung (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) touched first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.43.
Freshman Nate Brunk (Wyncote, Pa./Cheltenham) took first in the 100 butterfly while senior Jeremiah Roberts (Butler, Pa./Knoch) finished first in the 1000 with a time of 10:50.93.
Grove City will host the Grove City Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 9-11.
