Wolverines take 2nd at PAC Championships
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team finished second at the 2006 Grove City Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Saturday night. The Wolverines finished the three-day event with 906 team points. Westminster captured its second straight PAC title with 936 team points.
Grove City closed the meet by winning the 400 free relay in a PAC- and pool-record time of 3 minutes, 4.98 seconds. The team of freshman Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown), freshman Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley), senior Ben Haring (Kenai, Alaska/Kenai Central) and sophomore Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) surpassed the NCAA Division III "B" qualifying standard with their effort.
Courage earned the PAC's Most Valuable Performer award, as well as the Invitational's High Point Award. Courage won the 50, 100 and 200 free races and finished with 60 individual points.
Courage won the 100 free (44.74) as four Wolverine swimmers finished in the top six in that event. Haring took third (46.38) while Whitbeck (47.51) and Snyder (48.03) were fifth and sixth, respectively.
Junior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.84) while freshman Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) placed third in the 1650 (16:58.82). Senior Joel Boerckel (East Moline, Ill./United Township) took fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:57.94).
Sophomore Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) took sixth in the 1650 (17:15.03) while freshman Chad Toth (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) earned sixth in the 200 back (2:03.71).
In 1-meter diving, sophomore Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) won with 375.95 points. Senior Mike Shantz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) placed second with 292.45 points. Thursday night, Riddell won 3-meter diving with 342.20 points while Shantz took second with 262.80.
Several Grove City athletes will compete in Case Western Reserve's Veale Classic next Saturday, February 18 in Cleveland.
