Grove City wins Clarion Fall Classic
CLARION, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2006-07 season by winning the two-day Clarion University Fall Classic Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines accumulated 1,068 points while Clarion recorded 838 team points.
Junior NCAA All-American Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) earned four victories at Clarion while freshman Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) added three wins.
Courage won the 50 free in 21.56 seconds. He completed his sweep of the sprints by also winning the 100 (47.52) and the 200 free (1:47.64). Courage also won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:01.06.
Cressman made his collegiate debut by winning the 500 in 4:52.56. He also won the 1650 (17:08.40) and 400 IM (4:23.81).
Three Wolverine swimmers also earned runner-up finishes. Sophomore All-American Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) took second in the 50 with a time of 21.76 while senior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.76.
Junior Nick Barker (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) placed second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.61.
Grove City will face NCAA Division I Butler University Friday, November 3 at Youngstown State University.
