Grove City tops Kenyon, Case Western, W&J
GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team earned three wins Saturday afternoon, including a win over defending NCAA Division III champion Kenyon, in a quadrangular meet at Kenyon.
Grove City earned a 189.5-103.5 victory over Kenyon. The Wolverines also defeated Case Western Reserve, 197-96, and Washington & Jefferson, 244-51.
Freshman Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) earned three individual victories for the Wolverines. Cressman won the 1000 in 10 minutes, 11.33 seconds, then won the 500 in 4:48.97. Cressman also won the 400 individual medley in 4:18.83.
Junior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) earned two wins in the sprints, taking first in the 100 free (46.54) and the 200 free (1:44.05). Sophomore Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) won the 50 in 20.87 seconds.
Courage, Whitbeck, senior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and sophomore Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:37.17. Whitbeck, Larsen, sophomore Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Courage then closed the meet by winning the 200 free relay in 1:24.40. Whitbeck's leadoff time of 20.78 was enough to establish a new pool record at the Kenyon Aquatic Center.
Freshman Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won 1-meter diving with 203.85 points while junior Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) won 3-meter diving with 232.85 points. Riddell took second in 1-meter diving while Grubbs placed second on the 3-meter board.
Snyder took second in the 100 free (49.46) while Larsen placed second in the 100 butterfly in a career-best time of 53.23 seconds. Junior Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) took second in the 200 free in 1:49.92.
With six wins this season, Grove City now has 498 all-time victories. Grove City will pursue win No. 499 Monday night against visiting Gannon at 6 p.m.
