Grove City 2nd after first night
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the first night of competition in the two-day 10th annual James E. Longnecker Invitational in the Grove City College Pool. The Wolverines accumulated 297 total team points and trail only Carnegie Mellon (326) in the eight-team field.
Junior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) and freshman Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) each earned individual wins for Grove City. Courage won the 50 freestyle in 20.63 seconds. That time automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Division III Championships.
Meanwhile, Cressman captured the 500 in 4:44.12.
Grove City opened the meet by winning the 200 free relay in 1:25.54 as sophomore Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown), sophomore Mitch Young (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West), sophomore Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) combined for the victory.
Whitbeck also took second in the 50 (21.13) while senior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) finished third in the 200 individual medley (2:02.24). Cressman, Gilbert, Larsen and Courage closed Friday's session with a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:35.66).
Snyder took fifth in the 50 (22.17) while sophomore Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) finished sixth in the 500 (4:54.85).
In 3-meter diving, junior Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) took second with 190.35 points. Freshman Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) earned fifth place with 166.05 points.
Saturday's first session will begin at 10 a.m. The Saturday night session will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday with diving. Swimming events will begin at approximately 6 p.m.
