Wolverines take 2nd at Longnecker Invitational
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team placed second at the eight-team James E. Longnecker Invitational Saturday night, finishing the two-day event with 999 team points. Carnegie Mellon won the Invitational title with 1,081.5 points.
Junior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) and freshman Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) both secured two individual wins for Grove City. Courage won the 100 free in 45.29 seconds, automatically qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships. He also won the 200 free in 1:42.47.
Cressman, meanwhile, won the 400 individual medley in 4:17.18. He then won the 1650 in 16:51.12. Friday night, Cressman set a new Grove City record in the 500 free (4:44.12).
Courage, senior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), sophomore Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and sophomore Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) opened Saturday's action by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:36.27.
Whitbeck, Larsen, Courage and sophomore Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) closed the meet by winning the 400 free relay with a time of 3:07.84. That time provisionally qualifies the relay for the NCAA Championships.
Whitbeck took second in the 100 free (48.23) while Gilbert finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.98. Gilbert also grabbed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.40). Larsen took third in the 100 butterfly (52.85) while sophomore Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) earned third-place finishes in both the 400 IM (4:22.80) and the 1650 (17:09.03).
Junior Nick Barker (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) touched third in the 200 fly in 2:00.57 and fourth in the 100 fly (53.26). Freshman Rich Albertson (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) took fourth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.44.
Barron, Cressman, freshman Brian Schultz (Portersville, Pa./Portersville Christian) and sophomore Mitch Young (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) combined for a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:17.85). Schultz, Barker, Snyder and freshman Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) finished fourth in the 200 medley relay with a mark of 1:41.19.
Grove City also placed two divers among the top four in 1-meter competition. Junior Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) finished second with 199.50 points while freshman Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) took fourth with 192.20 points.
The Wolverines will visit Bethany Wednesday night in a Presidents' Athletic Conference dual meet. Grove City (7-1) currently has 499 all-time dual-meet victories.
