Grove City tops W&J; improves to 10-1
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 163-130 win over host Washington & Jefferson in the Henry Memorial Center natatorium.
Two Grove City swimmers earned multiple individual victories Saturday. Freshman Rich Albertson (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) won the 500 in 5 minutes, 15.88 seconds and also won the 1000 in 10:49.56. Freshman Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) won the 200 backstroke in 1:59.88 before winning the 400 individual medley (4:20.77).
Also for Grove City, sophomore Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) set a new pool record by winning the 50 free in 21.22 seconds. Freshman Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.97 while sophomore Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) touched first in the 200 free (1:48.31).
Whitbeck, sophomore Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), sophomore Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and junior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) closed the meet by winning the 200 free relay in a pool-record time of 1:26.33.
Whitbeck, Peter Larsen, freshman Brian Schultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Portersville Christian) and junior Tyler May (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:40.83.
Freshman Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won 1-meter diving with 197.70 points.
Grove City's 10 victories this season are the most for the Wolverines since the 1996-97 team went 10-2. The Wolverines host archrival Westminster Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
