Wolverines top Westminster
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team improved to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 143.5-136.5 dual meet victory over rival Westminster Tuesday night in the Grove City College Pool. It is Grove City's 10th straight win.
Grove City trailed entering the meet's final event, the 400 free relay. However, the quartet of sophomores Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown), Mitch Young (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West), Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) clinched the victory by winning the relay in 3 minutes, 12.52 seconds.
Grove City opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:35.54 as Larsen, Whitbeck, junior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) and senior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) combined for the win.
Courage also recorded three individual wins for the Wolverines. Courage won the 100 free in 45.28 seconds along with the 200 free (1:42.83). He also won the 200 individual medley in 1:57.16.
Freshman Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) earned a pair of individual victories for Grove City, winning both the 500 and 1000. Cressman won the 500 in 4:49.82, then set a new College record in the 1000 with a time of 9:54.73.
Whitbeck, this week's PAC Swimmer of the Week, won the 50 free in 20.61 seconds, which surpasses the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships. Larson touched first in the 100 butterfly (53.41).
Freshman diver Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won both 1- and 3-meter diving for Grove City. Grubbs won 1-meter with 204.00 points, then won the 3-meter competition with 175.65 points.
It is Grove City's first win over the Titans since 1996. The all-time dual-meet series is now tied at 37-37.
Grove City will visit Wooster in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
