Grove City sets single-season win record

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team swept a non-conference double-dual meet Friday night, improving to 14-1 on the 2006-2007 season. Grove City earned a 134-128 win over Penn State Behrend and also secured a 139-70 victory over Pitt-Bradford. The 14 wins are a new single-season program record.

Junior diver Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in 1-meter diving by accumulating 284.00 points. The 284.00 points are also a Grove City pool record for six dives.

Freshman Rich Albertson (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) helped lead Grove City's effort in the pool by sweeping the backstroke races. Albertson won the 100 back in 57.68 seconds. He then captured the 200 back in 2:04.90.

Five other Grove City swimmers each earned one individual victory. Senior Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook) won the 1000 in 10:49.89 while sophomore Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) won the 200 free (1:49.53). Sophomore Mitch Young (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) captured the 50 in 22.10 while junior Nick Barker (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) touched first in the 200 fly (2:02.85).

Senior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) won the 100 breaststroke in 59.23 seconds. Gilbert, freshman Brian Schultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Portersville Christian), sophomore Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and sophomore Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:37.39.

Gilbert, Wiedeman and senior Jason Amos (Westminster, Md./Carroll Christian) were honored during the meet as part of Senior Night.

The 1993-94 Grove City team went 13-0 and set the previous record for single-season wins. Grove City will look for its 15th win in the dual-meet finale Saturday against Fairmont State. The meet will be held at California University of Pennsylvania at 1 p.m.
