Grove City still 2nd after 2nd night of PAC Championships
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the second night of the three-day Grove City Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships at the Grove City College Pool. Grove City currently has 608 team points following the end of Friday night's competition. Westminster leads with 641.5 points.
Grove City established new pool and conference records in sweeping both relay events Friday night. Junior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg), senior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), sophomore Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and sophomore Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) opened the session by winning the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 33.32 seconds.
The Wolverines then closed the session by capturing the 800 free relay in 6:55.76 as Courage, freshman Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled), sophomore Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) combined for the victory. Both Grove City relay teams provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships while also setting new school records in each event.
Cressman also provisionally qualified ("B" cut) for the NCAA Championships in the 400 individual medley with a victorious time of 4:08.52. Courage won the 200 free in 1:40.86.
Gilbert took second in the 100 breaststroke with a "B" cut time of 58.29 while Larsen grabbed second in the 100 butterfly (52.41). Barron touched third in the 1000 (10:07.08) while junior Nick Barker (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) placed fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 52.71 seconds.
Junior Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) placed fifth in the 1000 (10:11.76), one spot ahead of senior Luke Wiedeman (Beltsville, Md./Cedar Brook). Wiedeman posted a time of 10:31.83. Snyder finished sixth in the 200 free (1:47.41) while Whitbeck claimed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.62).
Grove City is in pursuit of its first PAC title since 2004. Saturday's preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday night's finals will begin at 5:30 p.m.
