Wolverines place 2nd at PAC Championships
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team finished second overall at the Grove City Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Invitational Saturday night in the Grove City College Pool. The Wolverines closed the three-day event with 926 team points. Westminster repeated as Invitational and PAC champion with 964.5 team points.
Freshman Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) and junior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) shared the Invitational's High Point Award with 60 total points each. Both earned individual victories Saturday night.
Cressman won the 1650 in 16 minutes, 20.41 seconds. That time surpasses the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. It is also a new Grove City record.
Courage, meanwhile, won the 100 free in 44.77 seconds. During Saturday morning's preliminaries, Courage set a new pool record in the 100 with a mark of 44.69. He also earned PAC Most Valuable Performer honors.
Cressman, Courage, sophomore Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) and sophomore Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) closed the meet by winning the 400 free relay in a "B" qualifying time of 3:05.00.
In 3-meter diving, junior Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a victorious score of 454.85 points. Freshman Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) took second on the 3-meter board with 382.70 points.
Junior Nick Barker (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) grabbed second in the 200 fly with a career-best time of 1:58.12. Whitbeck also claimed third in the 100 free (46.48) while senior Andrew Gilbert (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) touched third in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.98).
Larsen finished fourth in the 100 free (47.71) while sophomore Mark Barron (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) placed fourth in the 1650 (16:50.83).
Junior Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) took fifth in the 1650 while freshman Richard Albertson (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) finished fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:01.74). Sophomore Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) placed sixth in the 100 free (48.16).
Head coach Dave Fritz earned the Grove City Invitational Men's Coach of the Year award.
Barron, Courage, Cressman, Gilbert, Larsen, Riddell, Snyder, Whitbeck and sophomore Mitch Young (Greeley, Colo/Greeley West) have all either automatically or provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in Houston, Texas March 15-17.
