Wolverines win Clarion Classic

CLARION, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2007-08 season Friday night and Saturday afternoon by winning the Clarion University of Pennsylvania Fall Classic. The Wolverines accrued 853 team points during the two-day event. Clarion took second with 598.5 points while Westminster (335) took third. Lycoming (56.5) and Frostburg State (32) completed the five-team field.

Three Grove City swimmers posted individual victories during the two-day event. Junior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) captured the 50 free in 21.38 seconds while senior Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) won the 500 in 5:05.35. Sophomore Rich Albertson (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) touched first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.40.

Whitbeck, junior Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), freshman Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown) and junior Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) won the 400 free relay in 3:19.58.

Coppelli took second in the 200 backstroke (2:07.49) while sophomore Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.37). Freshman Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) took second in the 500 (5:14.41) and the 1650 (17:56.93).

Albertson added a runner-up finish in the 100 fly (56.95) while senior Nick Barker (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) finished second in the 200 fly (2:10.79). Whitbeck finished second in the 100 free (49.02) while Peter Larsen placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:04.64).

Three Grove City relay teams also posted second-place finishes. Coppelli, Peter Larsen, Whitbeck and freshman Bennett Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) combined for a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:46.86). Coppelli, Keefer, Whitbeck and freshman Chris Marasco (Washington, Pa./Washington) took second in the 200 medley relay with a 1:43.02 clocking.

Marasco, Coppelli, Snyder and Whitbeck closed the meet by taking second in the 200 free relay in 1:30.84.

Grove City will host Carnegie Mellon Saturday, November 10 at 1 p.m.
