Two earn weekly swimming awards; Grove City 19th in poll

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Two members of the Grove City College men's swimming and diving team earned swimmer-of-the-week honors this week in recognition of their accomplishments. Junior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) is the CollegeSwimming.com Division III Men's Swimmer of the Week while sophomore Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) is the Presidents' Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week.

Whitbeck earned the national award for the second time this season after helping Grove City earn two victories last week. Whitbeck won the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.07 seconds in Grove City's 137-46 win over Bethany Dec. 5. Whitbeck then swept the 50- and 100-meter free races last Saturday afternoon in Grove City's 151-123 win at Hiram.

He won the 50-meter free in 23.61, then broke the pool record in the 100-meter race with a time of 53.66. Whitbeck then anchored Grove City's victorious 400-meter free relay team, which set a new pool record with a 3:38.54 clocking.

Larsen earned two individual wins in each of Grove City's meet victories last week. He won both the 200 breaststroke (2:17.41) and 200 individual medley (2:09.98) against Bethany. At Hiram, Larsen swept both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. He won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:11.14, then won the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:34.69.

Grove City is now 7-1 overall and has won seven consecutive dual meets. The Wolverines are ranked 19th in this week's CollegeSwimming.com/Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America Division III Top 25. Grove City received 159 voter points. Denison is this week's top-ranked squad.

The Wolverines return to action Jan. 19, 2008 against Washington & Jefferson. Grove City is in pursuit of its 57th straight winning season.
