Grove City wins Clarion Classic
CLARION, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2008-09 season Friday night and Saturday by winning the Clarion University Fall Classic. Grove City amassed 1,078.5 team points over the two days of competition in winning the title. Clarion finished second with 553 points while Westminster had 261.5 points. Frostburg State finished fourth with 49 points.
Grove City swimmers won 10 events at Clarion, including three relay victories. The quartet of sophomore Cam Copelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown), freshman Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), senior Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and senior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay in 3 minutes, 35.28 seconds.
Courage, Larsen, senior Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and senior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) won the 400 free relay in 3:11.70 while Coppelli, Snyder, Whitbeck and freshman Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) posted a victorious time of 1:27.84 in the 200 free relay.
Courage won both the 50 free (21.23) and 200 individual medley (1:59.79) while Gagliardo won the 500 in 4:59.38. Coppelli won the 100 backstroke in 55.05 seconds. Junior Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) touched first in the 400 IM (4:29.21) while freshman Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won the 200 butterfly in 2:05.26. Freshman Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) won the 1650 in 17:33.79.
Grove City will open the dual-meet portion of its schedule next Saturday, November 1 at Carnegie Mellon.
