Wolverines fall to CMU

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team captured seven total victories Saturday at Carnegie Mellon but the visiting Wolverines dropped a 174-125 decision to Carnegie Mellon in Grove City's 2008-09 dual-meet opener.

Senior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) captured three individual wins for Grove City. Courage won the 50 free in 21.06 seconds. He also won the 100 free in 46.50 and the 200 free in 1:45.10.

Sophomore Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown) won the 200 backstroke (1:57.82) while senior Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) captured the 100 butterfly in 53.76 seconds.

Grove City also picked up a pair of relay victories Saturday. Coppelli, freshman Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), Larsen and senior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) opened the meet with a victorious time of 1:37.06. Whitbeck, freshman Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township), senior Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Courage close the meet by winning the 200 free relay in a pool-record time of 1:24.02.

Whitbeck opened the 200 free relay with a 50-yard split of 20.86 seconds, which is the fastest 50 time ever recorded at CMU.

Grove City (0-1) will host Hiram November 15 in the 2008-09 home opener.
