Grove City downs Hiram in home opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team improved to 1-1 overall Saturday afternoon with a 152-114 victory over visiting Hiram in a non-conference dual meet at the Grove City College Pool.

Sophomore Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) paced Grove City by winning both the 200 free and the 200 backstroke Saturday. He posted a victorious time of 1 minute, 48.36 seconds in the 200 free, then won the 200 back in 2:07.59.

Senior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) set a new school record in winning the 100 backstroke in 52.00 seconds. He also touched first in the 50 free (21.00) and the 100 butterfly (52.42).

Sophomore Jared Bailey (Portsmouth, R.I./Aquidneck Island Christian) won the 1000 in 10:36.67 while freshman Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.61. Freshman Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) captured the 100 free in 48.03.

Also for Grove City, sophomore Bennett Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) won the 200 breaststroke (2:20.09) while freshman Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) reached the wall first in the 400 individual medley (4:21.37).

Freshman Joe Rzempoluch (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) won 1-meter diving with 194.15 points.

Senior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown), junior Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), sophomore Chris Marasco (Washington, Pa./Washington) and sophomore Dan Gummel (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:39.73. Gummel, Bowser, Courage and sophomore Andrew Parry (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) closed the meet by touching first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:21.53.

Grove City will host Saint Vincent Friday night in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference members.
