Wolverines own lead after 1st night

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is in first place after the first night of competition at the Wolverines' 12th annual James E. Longnecker Invitational. Grove City accumulated 473 points and leads Washington by 156 points.

Grove City opened the night by setting a new school record in the 200 free relay. Senior Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley), freshman Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township), senior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) and senior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) combined for a victorious time of 1 minute, 21.98 seconds.

Grove City also won the 400 medley relay in 3:34.90 as freshman Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), freshman Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls), Gagliardo and Whitbeck combined for the win.

Courage also won the 50 freestyle in an NCAA Championships qualifying time of 20.34 seconds. He led a top-five sweep for the Wolverines in that event. Bowser won the 200 individual medley in 1:57.53.

Whitbeck earned runner-up in the 50 (20.93) while Gagliardo took third in the 50 with a time of 21.39. Snyder finished fourth (21.70) while senior Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) touched fifth in 21.99.

Sophomore Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) earned runner-up in the 500 (4:52.39) while sophomore Bennett Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) finished third in the 200 IM (2:03.17).

In 3-meter diving, junior Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) placed second with 233.25 points.

Second-day action will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
