Grove City rolls past Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Grove City College men’s swimming and diving team closed the dual-meet portion of the 2008-09 season Saturday afternoon with a 156-114 victory over host Wooster in non-conference action. Grove City finishes the season with a 12-2 record. It is the third straight season that the Wolverines have finished with at least 10 wins.

Grove City swept the freestyle events Saturday. Senior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) picked up two wins at Wooster. He won the 50 free in 21.01 seconds, then won the 100 free in 46.31.

Senior Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) won the 200 free in 1:49.08 while sophomore Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) took the 500 in 5:03.64. Sophomore Chip Cressman (Marriottsville, Md./Homeschooled) won the 1000 with a time of 10:21.17.

Freshman Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won the 400 individual medley (4:17.17).

The Wolverines also captured both relays Saturday. Courage, senior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown), Snyder and senior Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:37.07.

Freshman Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township), Snyder, Whitbeck and Courage capped the meet by winning the 200 free relay in 1:24.65.

Junior Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won 3-meter diving with 176.55 points.

Grove City will now prepare for the season-ending Grove City Invitational/Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships February 12-14. The Wolverines are the defending conference champion.
