Grove City wins Clarion Classic
CLARION, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2009-10 season Friday night and Saturday by winning the Clarion University Fall Classic. The Wolverines accumulated 1,117 points at the two-day event to win the team title. Clarion finished with 666 points, followed by Westminster (89) and Frostburg State (81).
Sophomore Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) paced Grove City by sweeping the butterfly and individual medley. Bowser won the 100 butterfly in 54.12 seconds and took the 200 fly in 2:03.84. He posted a victorious time of 2:02.50 in the 200 individual medley and won the 400 IM in 4:24.54.
Senior Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.06 while junior Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown) won the 100 back (55.85). Sophomore Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) touched first in the 1650 in 17:32.27 and freshman Alex Mathews (York, Pa./Spring Grove) won the 200 backstroke in 2:02.14.
Coppelli, Bowser, sophomore Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and sophomore Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) won the 200 medley relay in 1:39.31.
Grove City will open the dual-meet portion of the schedule October 31 at Allegheny.
